Wordswereinsufficientfortheelevationofhisfeelings;andhewasobligedtowalkabouttheroom,whileElizabethtriedtounitecivilityandtruthinafewshortsentences。

“Agreatmanyindeed,”saidhercompanionwithasigh。

Elizabethaddedprivately,“AndhowmuchIshallhavetoconceal!”

Theirjourneywasperformedwithoutmuchconversation,oranyalarm;andwithinfourhoursoftheirleavingHunsfordtheyreachedMr。Gardinershouse,wheretheyweretoremainafewdays。

Janelookedwell,andElizabethhadlittleopportunityofstudyingherspirits,amidstthevariousengagementswhichthekindnessofheraunthadreservedforthem。ButJanewastogohomewithher,andatLongbourntherewouldbeleisureenoughforobservation。
